Fairmont Le Château Montebello: A Retreat with Great Golf

This iconic resort, built from over 10,000 red cedar logs, boasts a unique architectural heritage and stunning natural surroundings for over 93 years. Often described as the quintessential Canadian experience, it’s not just the world’s largest log cabin, but also a welcoming destination overflowing with adventure. Choose from over 40 unique on-site activities and create lasting memories. Recognized by U.S. News & World Report Travel as #5 Best Quebec Resorts and #31 Best Canada Resorts, Fairmont Le Château Montebello promises an unforgettable escape. We got to experience it for a few lovely days in the middle of the Canadian summer and were blown away by several parts of it.

Nestled amidst the picturesque Outaouais region, Fairmont Le Château Montebello stands as a testament to rustic luxury. From the nearest big city, Montreal, it is only a 90-minute drive and so easy to do so. As you drive through the township, all the signs are pointing toward the hotel. There are a few restaurants and eateries that are perfect if you want to leave the hotel at any stage. As you pull into the front, you are guided through a winding road which leads you right up to the front of the massive log cabin. You are met at the front of the cabin and can choose either the valet option or you can self-park in a secure area. When you walk into the hotel it resembles a huge fireplace in a log cabin. There is seating all around the fireplace with board games which makes it feel like a home. There is a bar in the lobby so families can enjoy an evening in front of the fire.

At the heart of the resort lies the crown jewel: a championship golf course designed by the legendary Stanley Thompson. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a casual player, you’ll be captivated by the beauty and challenge of Fairmont Le Château Montebello’s golf course. The course is a 3 minute drive from the lobby and is very convenient to get to. The crew are waiting and collect your bags and have them ready for the course. The course itself is such a site. Meandering through rolling hills and verdant forests, the course is a golfer’s paradise, challenging yet enjoyable for players of all levels. Imagine teeing off with the majestic Ottawa River as your backdrop. The course has plenty of slopes, and hills but a lot of fun.

Beyond the fairways, the resort offers a plethora of activities. They have a huge area which is dedicated to outdoor activities. You can hire bikes, rent sport equipment and they even have a small 9-hole mini golf course. There are also volleyball courts, playgrounds and a ton of open space – basically if you like being active and the outdoors, you have to come here.

For those seeking relaxation, the spa is an oasis of tranquility. The indoor pool, a centerpiece of the resort, is perfect for a leisurely swim. Nature enthusiasts can explore the surrounding area through hiking, fishing, or kayaking. There is a 50m lap pool but there are also saunas and jacuzzis which are perfect to just relax and enjoy the view. There are also so many walks where you can enjoy and have peaceful moments in nature. The outdoor pool is one of the centerpieces of the hotel. With a bar and plenty of seating, many people are here all day enjoying the sun and the music that goes on.

The accommodation at Fairmont Le Château Montebello is as delightful as the rest of the resort. Classic rooms exude rustic charm with modern comforts, while deluxe rooms and suites offer added space and luxury. Each room is thoughtfully appointed with a blend of natural elements and contemporary amenities, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. We had two double beds and it was enough to fit our family in the room. There was heating and a view of the river from our window.

The resort’s culinary offerings are equally impressive. From fine dining to casual fare, the chefs craft delectable dishes using fresh, local ingredients. Whether you’re enjoying a romantic dinner or a family-style meal, you’re sure to be delighted. The breakfast is located in the huge old library area with tables both inside and outside. They specialize in tasty breakfast desserts that feel like they have been cooked in your own kitchen. If the weather is good, get a chair outside and enjoy the freshness. One of the nights we had an early dinner at the Barbecue & Terrace – this involved unlimited meat and sides as the sun went down looking over the river, such a pleasant way to finish the night. The other evening we enjoyed a dinner at the same breakfast spot, the Aux Chantignoles which was a combination of seafood and pasta dishes that were simply on point.

Fairmont Le Château Montebello is more than just a hotel; it’s a destination. With its stunning natural setting, world-class golf course, and exceptional amenities, this iconic resort offers an unforgettable experience for travelers seeking a blend of adventure and relaxation. We already want to come back during the winter season and enjoy marshmallows by the campfire.
