Technology has changed the way we travel forever and has changed the way we pack as well! You have limited space and weight, plus the need to bring everything you need in order to not spend money on extras. Technology is one of those things that can be heavy, but fundamental when you travel. Here’s a list of technology items we need to pack when we travel!
Cameras
We can’t travel without our camera equipment. Our Nikon Z7 (mirrorless camera), Canon EOS M6, Nikon D850, GoPro Hero 5 & 6, Insta 360, DJI Mavic Pro, DJI Spark, name it, we have it… maybe. If we don’t have it, we are always up to try a new product to tell you all about it and how it can be essential for travellers like you! We love creating content and most of our carry on is composed of camera gear. You can read fully about our travel photography here, but at the moment we shoot mainly with a Nikon Z7 and iPhone 11 Pro!.
Camera accessories
They may not be electronic, but they go along with our cameras to enhance the creativity in our work! We have a Split Gadget Dome for our GoPro, tripods, Ollo Clips for our iPhones and waterproof phone protectors for when we want to bring them in the water! The Ollo Clip is a piece of tech we really recommend you if you shoot a lot with the iPhone. Most importantly, when you shoot videos, having the clip over will remove the cropped effect (if you haven’t noticed!). Best for last, our Joby Inc tripods and Gorilla pods are a MUST. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to function properly to create the content by ourselves. We use the Gorilla 5K, which is super strong and holds devices weighing up to 5 kg. With that, we have the GorillaPod Rig Upgrade, which are extra accessories like the GorillaPod arms that provide easy adjustment for optimal positioning, two 6-socket GorillaPod arms, etc (check the link to see details!). The most used item we have right now it the Telepod Pro kit because we actually film a lot of things on our iPhones too! A life changer! Lastly, we have this light called the Beamo, a must to get some light. It is SUPER strong and waterproof which is perfect for adventurers like us.
Smartphone
Can we even leave home without our smartphones nowadays? While travelling, our iPhones are probably the most important items. If we have to choose only one tech item to bring with us, it would be our iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone XR for our Instagram work and iPhone 8 Plus. They can take stunning photos and you can work on it as well. I personally have 2 phones, using our old iPhone XR & 6 to store all of our apps to do some “internet” work, haha. Smartphones can help us share our travels and to update our followers on what’s going on. Don’t forget that if you travel a lot and your country blocks your phone, get it unlocked so you can use the SIM cards from another country.
Phone accessories
Other than our Ollo Clip extensions, we also need split adaptors to be able to charge our phones at the same time as using our headphones. The adaptors are called Lightning Audio + Charge RockStar, from Belkin. Belkin is one of the top trusted brands with Apple iPhone accessories. We have our iPhone charging cords but do appreciate a few other more rigid and longer cords from Belkin. Lastly, we already have mentioned it but the Telepod Pro kit is what we use as a tripod for our phones and they are the best!
Power banks
There’s no way we leave home without power banks, so when we travel, we actually bring many with us. Our favourite power bank is the Valet Charger Power Pack 6700 mAh because it can charge our Apple Watch and quite fast too! In terms of our favourite brands for power banks, we would recommend Anker and Belkin. They both survived very long so far without losing their charges. Considering we brought our power banks up Everest base camp in the very cold temperature, it had lost a little bit of charge, but still going on strong!
Entertainment technology
There are the photography essentials we HAVE to bring, but there is also the entertainment tech we can’t resist to add the few extra KGs in the luggage for some more fun! We absolutely love to bring our own portable speakers because we love to do workouts in the park, bring our music on bike rides or on road trips. Our Beoplay P6 Premium from Bang & Olufsen is the ultimate portable speaker with its powerful True360 perfect sound. This piece of tech is incredible to our ears. With a quality of sound as good as a sound system and volume that can go so high up, it is a must-have and actually is perfect to start a big party! It is bigger than the average portable speaker, but worth every extra kilo!
If we are going really light in our luggage, we bring our Bose SoundLink Micro Bluetooth speaker. It is waterproof and actually a piece of tech we are not scared to strap to our bikes or backpacks during hikes. Then, of course, we love carrying little fun items such as our Instax SQ6! It is so fun to be able to take a few snaps, have it on hand right away and hand it to your loved ones. In a world with all things digital, it’s great to have something physical. We have Fujifilm’s old Instax SP-2 printer and we actually like to print phone photos to get physical copies!
Laptops
Mitch and I both have old MacBook Airs 13′! Depending on our travels, we sometimes bring both our laptops, one of them, or none of them! We didn’t bring our laptops to our Nepal trip for example considering we were hiking Everest base camp.
Portable hard drives
We don’t save many files on our laptops but on our hard drives. We literally have over 10 ones considering taking RAW pictures and videos can eat a lot of space. Hard drives are also convenient to transport and access when you need it. Cloud services are also a good alternative for file storage, but if you store things online, you need to consider the speed of the internet, etc. Both of us have Western Digital and Seagate hard drives but the LaCie Rugged hard drives are really our go-to. We have a massive 10TB one at home to back up everything and need a new one very soon!
Plugs and adaptors
How can you travel without these? For our travel adaptor, the TWIST+ World Adapter DUO is our go-to since we are Apple Laptop users and it has an Apple MagSafe 1&2 adapter or Apple Portable Power Adapters. It’s an all-in-one piece that can charge your devices with a single outlet!
That’s not all, if you are a technology-savvy person like us with many devices to charge, this EVRI 80W USB – C Laptop Charger is going to save your life, at least, it saved ours! Not only it helps us to charge many devices at a time with the 4 ports, but with Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0, it is fast charging with 80W of power!
