Picture an island full of soft white sand, the clearest blue waters you have ever seen combined with luxury accommodation. Now that is getting close to what you will experience when you book a stay at Velassaru, a truly great and cozy island in the Maldives.
Where is Velassaru Located?
Velassaru Maldives is only a short 30 minute speedboat ride from Male International Airport (the only way you can get into the Maldives). Now, it is a hectic sight when you get through arrivals at the airport. There are dozens of stands from each resort. All you do is find the Velassaru stand and they will take your luggage and get you on the speedboat!
Things around Velassaru
One thing we can safely say is that you will have plenty to do here. The gym here is phenomenal and has more than enough to keep you busy if you are a fitness connoisseur. If you are the romantic type (and a great place to do it) they have private dining experiences you can do. We received a bottle of the finest bubbly and sat on the beach and watch the sun drift into the night. Another way to see the sunsets here (and the Maldives has as good as any) is by taking the Sunset Cruise. It takes you out on the water to enjoy snacks and drinks on a traditional boat, while sitting on comfy bean bags. Being on the water while the sun is setting is an experience in itself! If you enjoy being on the water, there is also big game fishing, night fishing, dolphin tours and the seabob reef exploration. (The seabob is a glass boat/half submarine which travels along the reef with an up close of anything.)
Food and Drink at Velassaru
Like most islands in the Maldives, you are absolutely spoilt for choice when it comes to wining and dining here at Velassaru. We spent most of our time eating at the restaurants near the front of the island which gave us a great change. Turquoise had a chilled out vibe and Fen Bar had a perfect combination of sun beds and beats in the background. We loved our breakfast every morning which had a huge range of both healthy and tasty treats. Their range of fruits was something that we still crave right now.
Velassaru Facilities
One of the best things about being on a remote island is that there are plenty of water activities. There’s a Diving centre and a very well equipped water sports centre. They have so much to offer including wakeboarding, tubing, windsurfing, kite surfing, kayaking, glass kayaks and of course some Jet Ski action. It’s basically what you expect in the Maldives otherwise it means that you are under-equipped! It is located right next to the front of the hotel and there were actually too many activities to choose from! The spa is on a massive water villa and there is a jet pool that is definitely a favourite for photographers and Instagrammers passing by this resort. We were able to fit in a spa session and relax in comfort out on the water while getting all the knots out of our bodies.
Velassaru Rates
We were able to stay in a Deluxe Bungalow which backed on to the beach on one side and the other side we were right next to the gym facilities (which were very impressive). One of our favourite features of the room was the outdoor bathroom and outdoor shower. There was something very relaxing and open about showering outdoors. You can get a Deluxe Bungalow from as low as 301$USD
You can compare prices before booking on Booking or Hotels and Agoda. The Executive suite we had is priced from 290$US, which is a bargain for all the space (514 sq. ft.)!
How was the stay?
One of the main appeals of Velassaru is that you can get off the plane and be in your water villa here within the hour. Not only is it close enough to the airport, the island is small enough for you to go around without taking ages but big enough for you to not feel too close from your neighbouring room. This would, of course, depend on which room you go for. They also have incredible sunsets (well so does most of the Maldives). We loved the attention to details from the staff as they made sure we were well looked after with whatever we needed. The dhow boat for a sunset cruise is a unique and romantic way to spend sunsets and needs to be done at least once when you visit the Maldives!
