After spending a great romantic day at the wineries with Mitch around the Inle Lake in Myanmar, we were biking back to our hotel while the sun was setting. Unfortunately this meant I misjudged the road and my camera took a leap while I passed over a poorly placed speed bump.
The camera gods were with me, only the lens snapped. I waited to be back in Saigon to get my repairs done and had heard rumours of this place on Antique Street in District 1.
(This place exists. At 11 Le Cong Kieu, they are camera wizards. The place looks sketchy, old, but you somehow feel assured in this trustworthy atmosphere. It is a real Nikon service facility.
I brought to them the lens on a Wednesday and they promised to give me the diagnosis on Friday or Saturday to pick it up the next day. They were really kind and even asked me beforehand if I needed it fast, so they can process other urgent repairs before (if it was urgent, he would’ve gave me the diagnosis the same day).
The gentleman approximately quoted that it usually costs around 300,000VND+ (15USD), but if it costs more he would tell me before doing the repair. Sadly for my case, my lens was severely broken, so there was no way to save it. A basic 55-200mm, so cheaper to buy a new one than to order pieces to repair this current one.
Their prices are good. They charge 100,000VND (5USD) for a camera cleaning. They are very honest with their quotations.
I really recommend you to go here. I know there are a lot of camera repair places, but they aren’t authorized camera repair shops. We all hear and read scary stories of people getting their original camera parts changed to cheaper ones, but that’s simply if you make gambling decisions to visit a non-authorized shop. Nikon & Canon owners you are in luck as there are authorized repair centres in HCMC & Hanoi. These shops are the recommended fix, but will be of course pricier than some other repair shops. You take the risk!
